Here are some ways to add some spice and variety to a lesson. Why not use one this week!?
1. http://www.brainpop.com/ has some free videos you can use that are geared toward a middle
school audience.
2. Online bulletin boards/rooms. you can go to http://todaysmeet.com/ or padlet.com to create a room. Students can login to your room (using a link you post to Haiku) to discuss something from class or a video they were to have watched.
3. Bitstrips.com (thanks Jennifer Young for the tip) go to http://www.bitstripsforschools.com/. You can create a class (free for 1 month) and assign them projects. Jennifer has done a substance abuse awareness ad and I've done "all about me" projects with Spanish 1. There's a "Stop Bullying" challenge you can enter your class in to.
4. You could try flipping your classroom by having students watch a video ahead of time then working with the material in class: watchknowlearn.org, youtube.edu, neok12.com, and khanacademy.org are good sources.
or have students make their own videos: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.html
